Globalization, digitalization, new sustainability requirements, and the blurring or dissolution of traditional economic and regulatory spheres are also generating new value creation models in the construction industry. However, the degree of digitalization and innovation in the construction industry is still very low in many sectors today.<\/p>\n
In recent years there has been no urgent need to increase efficiency, especially in the area of planning and construction processes, or to deal more intensively with the challenges and opportunities of digitalization.<\/p>\n
The processes and business models in the planning and construction sector are complex today, often still manual or only minimally automated, and require interdisciplinary expertise. Projects are frequently characterized by a large number of stakeholders with sometimes divergent interests, interface problems, and consequently, a high susceptibility to errors and increased costs.<\/p>\n
The need for increasing efficiency and speed, as well as higher quality and individualization demands from market participants, leads to a questioning of classic procedures and actions within the value chain and thus demands a willingness to innovate throughout the entire industry.<\/p>\n
Many founders and startup entrepreneurs have now recognized the challenges and attractiveness of the market. A multitude of innovative digital solutions for planning and construction are emerging.<\/p>\n
The German Federal Association for Digital Construction (BDBau) has made it its mission to promote and represent the interests of these startup companies and founders.<\/p>\n

Technology-based solutions for new and existing problems within the construction industry, specifically related to the development, planning, design, and construction of buildings (both structural and civil engineering), can be summarized under the term Construction Technology, or ConTech for short. Startups operating in this field, also known as ConTechs, develop, initiate, and implement new products and services that optimize or disrupt existing processes or business models.<\/p>\n

Technology has already permeated and fundamentally transformed many areas of life and the economy. For the construction industry, and the established companies and institutions operating within it, digitalization, including automation, offers numerous opportunities to secure their future viability and long-term market position. This encompasses all stages of digitalization, from utilizing data as a foundation and optimizing existing processes to developing entirely new business models to increase efficiency, meet new requirements such as sustainability, and satisfy the needs of the market, customers, and users.<\/p>\n
The potential of ConTech is not yet being fully exploited in the construction industry. We are convinced that the sector is inherently strong and willing enough to assume the responsibility we bear for people, society, the overall economy, and the environment, and to master current and future challenges. Potential and solutions lie in the connection between established industry players and ConTech. We see ourselves as representatives of ConTech and as intermediaries between these new players and those on the side of established companies, the construction industry, politics, science, and other interest groups related to planning and construction.<\/p>\n
We promote cooperation between startups and established construction companies, strive to remove obstacles and barriers, and increase awareness of and openness to digitalization and innovation in the planning and construction sector. It is essential to bridge existing gaps between technologies, industries, and research areas, and to discover and embrace new approaches. Therefore, we welcome and encourage collaborations and exchange among all stakeholders involved in the value chain. Our primary objective is to represent the interests of ConTechs (Construction, Technology, Engineering, and Development) to maintain and strengthen the innovative capacity and competitiveness of companies in the planning and construction sector in both national and international competition.<\/p>\n

A strong culture of innovation is one of the most important drivers for a robust and successful construction industry. This involves bridging existing boundaries between technologies, sectors, and research areas, and discovering and embracing innovations. We therefore welcome and promote cooperation and exchange, particularly with other startup associations, construction industry associations, and the PropTech sector.<\/p>\n
